Cognitive Restructuring: Changing After Breakup

Cognitive Restructuring is a process of identifying, challenging and changing negative and unhelpful thoughts that cause emotional distress, commonly utilised after a breakup.
Cognitive Restructuring works by helping people to recognize negative thought patterns, evaluate their validity, and replace them with healthier alternatives. The negative thought might be, 'Nobody will ever love me again, because my ex-partner left me,' which can cause significant distress. Restructured, healthier thought might be, 'It's okay to feel upset about the break-up, but it doesn't mean that I'm unlovable or that I'll never find love again.' By practicing these new thought patterns, people can build healthier self-perceptions and reduce emotional distress.
