Mental Model: Embracing Divergent Thinking

Divergent thinking is a thought process used for generating creative ideas by exploring several possible solutions. This approach encourages thinking out of the box and valuing unique perspectives.
Divergent thinking emphasizes creativity, open-endedness and plurality of thought. It can often lead to innovative solutions not readily apparent through traditional, linear thinking. For example, in a brainstorming meeting, instead of thinking in a linear, systemic way, divergent thinking prompts participants to explore as many solution paths as possible, even those that may seem unconventional. This kind of thinking discourages immediate judgement, allows for different perspectives, nurtures creativity and fosters innovative thinking.
Creative thinking - in terms of idea creativity - is not a mystical talent. It is a skill that can be practised and nurtured - Edward de Bono
